About Us

The UUHS is a think tank promoting the interests of atheist, agnostic, secular humanist, and free-thought Unitarian Universalists excluded by continuing attempts to re-define UU as yet another religious faith. The UUHS’s aim is to convince Unitarian Universalist members and UUA leadership to re-align with UU’s historic, philosophical, humanistic, golden phase and to revitalize Humanism within UUism.

The UUHS further believes that every Humanist, Atheist, Agnostic, and Unbeliever should have a refuge where she feels welcome and can enjoy the fellowship offered by people of like mind. This refuge should be led by the spirit of Humanism but be structured in a way that is much more brick-and-mortar, personal and local than are many AHA organizations. If it is not possible in all cases to bring back the UUA churches we remember, then we should strive to provide every assistance possible to persons and groups desirous of an alternative opportunity, either within or outside of the UUA umbrella.

We are the following five, plus all of you who want what the UU was once and should be again.

Salman Rushdie once noted that it is in our nature to seek love, community, and understanding.  Secular Humanists excel in understanding our natural world while Unitarian Universalist Congregations provide a wonderful community that promotes love and compassion.  Though the modern Humanist movement was born from Unitarians, somewhere along the line, religious spirituality separated the two.  If reunited, we become a powerful force that can affect change to better humanity and our environment.

My goal for Unitarian Universalists is that humanism be resurrected as the association’s primary focus.
My hope is that the UU Humanist Symposium think tank will help bring this revitalization about.
It is my belief that UU can again be a progressive force for improving people’s standard of living and quality of life by combating greed, cynicism, and propaganda if we emphasis the humanist values and ethics of reason, critical thinking, and factual truth.
Note that this is not partisan because sophisticated conservatives will agree, if for no other reason than, out of enlightened self interest.
